Merkel announced third wave of coronavirus and extended lockdown

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the third wave of coronavirus has already been identified, and it is necessary to fight it. Merkel announced this following a meeting with the heads of the federal states on countering the pandemic, RIA Novosti reports.

According to her, the German authorities have already received the first reports of virus mutations. The Chancellor noted that the government realizes that the strains are becoming more and more, and the only question is how quickly their number is increasing. Merkel also announced that following the meeting, a decision was made to extend the lockdown introduced in the country on November 2 last year until March 7.

Earlier it was reported that in Germany the court acquitted a man for violating quarantine measures, recognizing them as “a catastrophically erroneous decision.” It is noted that the decision of the Weimar court (federal state of Thuringia) is contrary to the opinion of the majority of scientists and politicians in Germany, and also calls into question government measures to combat the spread of coronavirus.

At the beginning of November, Germany imposed a strict quarantine due to an increase in cases of coronavirus infection. By order of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, restaurants, bars, cinemas, entertainment venues, fitness clubs, swimming pools, in particular, were closed, and the work of shops was limited. Residents of the country are prohibited from gathering in companies of more than ten people in public places.
