German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas warned against disrupting the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This is reported by the Yahoo News portal.
Maas said that the economic isolation of Russia along with China could bring the two countries closer together and contribute to the emergence of “the largest economic and military alliance.” “Therefore, I am opposed to cutting off all ties with Russia,” he said in the Bundestag.
Earlier it was reported that Treasury Secretary Olaf Scholz offered the 45th US President Donald Trump’s administration assistance in importing American liquefied gas in exchange for lifting sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. According to media reports, the German government was ready to provide the United States with financial support of up to one billion euros. Against the background of the scandal, Scholz was summoned to the Bundestag.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea was supposed to be commissioned at the end of 2019. However, its completion was hampered, in particular, by the threat of sanctions from the United States, due to which European companies began to leave the project.
