The shortage of next-generation consoles was caused by the lack of components for the production of the console. This is reported by the ArsTechnica edition with reference to top managers of Sony.
Japan’s CFO Hiroki Totoki confirmed the shortage in the console market during a Sony quarterly results briefing. “It is difficult for us to increase production of PS5 due to the lack of semiconductors and other components,” he said. A top manager of the company noted that Sony failed to meet the growing market needs, but the corporation will do everything possible to achieve this goal.
Totoki also noted that the PlayStation division’s revenue from games and digital services during the New Years was up 50 percent from the same period last year. A senior executive noted that 87 percent of PlayStation 5 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus, making the service an important profit driver in the future.
Sony predicted the best fiscal year in the history of the gaming division. The company shipped approximately 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units in the last quarter, with total revenue of $ 22.7 billion last year.
Previously, AMD CEO Lisa Su, whose company supplies processors for next-generation consoles, recognized a shortage in the market. According to her, in the second half of 2021, set-top boxes from Sony and Microsoft should appear on the free sale, as AMD intends to increase production capacity.
