Former French presidential candidate Francois Asselino, leader of the People’s Republican Union party, was detained on charges of sexual harassment and moral abuse. Le Point newspaper reports.
It is noted that the investigation was launched in May 2020. The charges against Asselino were brought forward by his former subordinates. Since the morning of February 3, the detained politician has been answering questions from investigators.
The party leader himself believes that in this way they want to prevent him from participating in the elections in 2022. He denies all accusations and considers them a lie and slander.
Asselino ran for the presidency in 2017, dropping out after the first round with 0.92 percent of the vote. He lost to the current French President Emmanuel Macron, finishing ninth out of 11.
