Military seizing power in Myanmar investigates electoral violations

The military who have seized power in Myanmar are planning to investigate alleged corruption in the elections in 2020. This is reported by The Independent with reference to the statement of the new authorities.

General Min Aung Hlen, acting head of state, said a new investigation would begin shortly. The previous one ended in nothing: the special commission came to the conclusion that the elections were held without significant violations. Four days later, the military staged a coup. The general also noted that the country will continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and take care of the welfare of its citizens.

A day earlier, it was reported that protests against the new government began in Myanmar. The government, installed by the organizers of the coup, has warned against calls for riot in the media and social networks. The corresponding statement was made by the Ministry of Information.

On February 2, the military issued a ban on all air travel in the country until the end of spring. Prior to that, it became known about the dissolution of the government, as well as the arrest of Myanmar President Vin Myin and the head of the country’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Aung San Suu Kyi, who holds the post of State Counselor and Foreign Minister.

The NLD said that the army had organized a coup d’état and demanded that all the detainees be released immediately. In the capital, Naypyidaw, telephone and internet connections are unavailable. Military men have been spotted in large cities, residents are massively withdrawing money from bank cards and buying food.
