French President Emmanuel Macron said that Great Britain should decide on its foreign policy and not try to simultaneously enroll in the closest allies of both the European Union (EU) and the United States. Reported by The Guardian.
“What course will the UK choose? It cannot be the best ally of the United States, and the best ally of the EU, and the new Singapore,” Macron said. According to him, he got the impression that the British authorities promise their citizens everything at once.
The French leader added that if London chooses a course towards transatlantic politics, he will have to clarify the EU, as this would mean a discrepancy with the rules of the European Union in the market sphere.
Macron noted that France and Great Britain remain allies. “I would like good, peaceful relations. We remain allies. History and geography do not change, so I do not think that the fate of the British people is different from ours,” the politician said.
In December, the UK and the European Union reached an agreement on the terms of Brexit, thanks to which London and Brussels will be able to finalize the “divorce”, including in the economic part. The parties managed to agree on all the main aspects of relations after December 31, when the transition period expires. One of the main documents in the framework of the general agreement was the trade agreement, which provides for the mutual absence of duties and quotas.
