Washington calls on the Myanmar military, who staged a coup and announced the introduction of a state of emergency in the republic, to release all high-ranking officials and politicians of the country detained by them. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, according to the agency’s website.
The United States expresses grave concern and concern over the detention of several civilian government leaders, including State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi. “We call on the Myanmar military to release all civil society officials and leaders and to respect the will of the people of the country, expressed during the democratic elections on November 8,” the statement said.
Blinken stressed that Washington supports citizens in their pursuit of democracy, freedom, peace and development. “The military must immediately undo their actions,” concluded the US Secretary of State.
The Myanmar military staged a coup and detained President Vin Myin and the head of the country’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Aung San Suu Kyi, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. They announced that power was passing into the hands of the commander-in-chief of the country’s armed forces, Min Aung Hlain, and introduced a state of emergency in the country for a year.
In November 2020, elections were held in Myanmar, during which the NLD won, but the military supporting the Union Solidarity and Development Party did not agree with the results. They threatened to “take action” over the alleged vote rigging.
