Lviv authorities decided to use coffee grounds to fight ice on the streets. This was reported by the BBC with reference to the press service of the local city council.
So, the municipality decided that ground coffee has abrasive properties, is cheaper than a special reagent and improves the quality of the soil. “In the countries of Scandinavia and Europe, they are so fighting with ice in parks. I thought: why not do this here,” said the assistant to the mayor of the city Irina Orshak.
In turn, local environmentalists believe that coffee is safe for the environment: it can be sprinkled on lawns and tree roots without causing any harm. As part of the experiment, the authorities plan to use the milled grains to combat icing for at least several weeks, before the frost ends. In the future, this practice may become regular.
Earlier, due to a sharp change in weather conditions, residents of Odessa were able to observe a rare natural phenomenon – the “boiling sea”. Severe frosts and a relatively high water temperature formed a thick layer of steam over the water surface, which soon enveloped the entire city.
