Germany stood up for the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project in front of France, which allowed the expansion of sanctions against Russia. Klaus Ernst, head of the Bundestag’s Committee on Economics and Energy, said that Paris’s demand was unfounded and wrong. RIA Novosti reports.
The politician explained that the suspension of an already approved project will lead to the fact that Germany will have to pay compensation for investments made in construction. In addition, this will result in higher gas prices for German consumers and taxpayers. Thus, the inhabitants of Germany will have to bear responsibility for “Russian misconduct”.
Earlier, the Secretary of State at the French Foreign Ministry, Clement Bon, said that he considers it possible to expand sanctions against Paris against Moscow. According to him, the EU does not exclude their introduction in relation to the almost completed gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.
Earlier it was reported that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder stood up for Nord Stream 2. According to him, the demands to stop the construction of the pipeline do not reflect the position of the majority of Germans. He noted that Nord Stream 2 is intended to ensure the energy security of the next generation of German citizens.
