The head of the State Duma Committee Pavel Zavalny said that the State Duma Committee on Energy and the Committee and the Bundestag on Economy and Energy will unite to fight US sanctions on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, there is no pressure yet, but there is a proposal from the administration of US President Joe Biden to suspend the implementation of the project and once again discuss with its allies, including from the European Union and German colleagues, the feasibility and necessity of continuing its construction.
Zavalny noted that the general position is that the project should be completed, and that Germany and other European countries need it to achieve environmental goals. He stressed that the committee will resist attempts to suspend the implementation of this project.
Earlier, Zavalny said that Nord Stream 2 would be completed, despite the difficulties. According to him, the geopolitical ambitions of the United States and Washington’s desire to flood Europe with its liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be “some obstacle” to the completion of the pipeline, but the facility will still be built in the end.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea was supposed to be commissioned at the end of 2019. However, its completion was hampered, in particular, by the threat of sanctions from the United States, due to which European companies began to withdraw from the project.
