Cars of the Japanese concern Toyota turned out to be the best-selling cars in the world in 2020 and overtook its main competitor, the German manufacturer Volkswagen, in popularity. This follows from the Toyota Motor report. The last time a Japanese concern topped the world ranking in car sales in 2015.
Toyota, as well as group manufacturers Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors, sold 9.53 million vehicles in 2020, down 11.3 percent from 2019, according to the manufacturer. This is the first decline in global sales for the group in five years and the first specifically for Toyota in 10 years.
Volkswagen sold about 9.3 million vehicles last year, the manufacturer said in mid-January. This is 15.2 percent less than a year earlier.
The Japanese brand by the end of 2020 reached a record level of production in the entire history of the company, despite the negative impact of the coronavirus and the suspension of factories. Production was boosted mainly by increased demand in China, whose economy is recovering faster than others from the pandemic.
