President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko complained about too strong liberalization of laws in the country, BelTA has learned.
Speaking at a meeting on improving legislation, he said that the authorities and law enforcement agencies allowed Belarus “not to fall into the abyss of yet another color revolution,” although “foreign sponsors of the protests” wanted it.
According to Lukashenko, a lot has been done in the country in recent years towards the liberalization of legal norms.
“However, the events that have taken place sharply raise the question: are we too carried away? Legislation should not only promptly respond to any violations, but also anticipate possible threats. And this is the most important thing,” the president said.
Earlier, Lukashenko said that at the upcoming All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, amendments to the Constitution may be outlined. Their adoption is possible only at a referendum. According to the head of state, the changes to the basic law will affect the political system, not the economy.
In Belarus, protests have been going on for almost half a year demanding Lukashenka’s resignation and new elections.
