Vivaldi Technologies announced the release of the final version of the proprietary browser Vivaldi 3.6 , developed on the basis of the Chromium engine. The browser is being developed by the former developers of Opera Presto and aims to create a customizable and functional browser that preserves the privacy of user data. The main features include a tracking and ad blocker, note, history and bookmark managers, private browsing mode, end-to-end encrypted sync, tab grouping mode, sidebar, configurator with a large number of settings, horizontal tab display mode, as well as in test mode built-in email client, rss reader and calendar.
The browser interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, the Node.js framework, Browserify, and various off-the-shelf NPM modules. Vivaldi assemblies prepared for Linux, Windows, Android and macOS. For past releases, the open source project distributes the source code for changes to Chromium. The Vivaldi interface is implemented in JavaScript, available in source code, but under a proprietary license.
In the new release:
- The work with tab groups has been significantly improved – now an additional tab bar is automatically activated to display the pages included in the group, which makes working with tabs more convenient and intuitive. If necessary, the additional panel can be docked for permanent use.
- Work continued on expanding the options for customizing browser context menus – sidebar context menus were added to the list of available for editing.
- To speed up the launch of the browser, the option of lazy loading of web panels has been added. Previously, with a large number of custom web panels, when the browser was started, all their content was loaded, which slowed down the launch process; when using the new option, the content of the web panel will be loaded only at the moment of its activation.
- The list of fixed bugs includes issues with exiting full screen mode when watching a video, incorrect switching between tabs when closing an active one, and creating an incorrect name for a web page shortcut saved to the desktop.
- For the Linux version, the proprietary media codec library has been updated to version 87.0.4280.66.
- Chromium engine updated to version 88.0.4324.99.
