The process of impeachment of former US President Donald Trump, which was launched by the Democratic Party, of which the current American leader Joe Biden is one of the representatives, could “blow up” the Senate. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham warned the Democrats about this, reports FOX News.
According to him, the further implementation of the Democratic Party’s initiative will only cause more damage to the nation, especially if witnesses are involved in the process, which may drag on the process “for weeks, if not months.” Graham stressed that the second attempt to impeach Trump is ill-considered, and also violates statutory norms. In this regard, he called on the Democrats to end this “parody” as soon as possible, taking into account the fact that Trump has already left the presidency.
“We need to make sure that this process never goes anywhere … Because I do not want to legitimize the impeachment process used in the House of Representatives. I think that it is a danger to democracy and the very institution of the presidency.” said the senator.
Graham also noted that Biden’s position on this issue was a big disappointment for him. As the senator clarified, the current president could easily put an end to this process and leave everything in the past, but instead chose to stay on the sidelines, despite his calls for the country’s unity, voiced during the inaugural speech.
Earlier in January, it became known that the US Senate postponed consideration of Trump’s impeachment until February 9. At the same time, the demand to recognize the impeachment process as illegal was rejected. Prior to that, American senators took the oath of office at the trial to impeach the ex-president. Trump himself, in turn, has already begun negotiations with lawyers to develop a defense strategy at the upcoming hearing.
On January 14, the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump over the recent riots in Washington. The last vote was the second attempt to remove the politician from office. He became the first president of the United States to be impeached for the second time, especially after he stepped down. Democrats motivate the decision to impeach Trump, including by the fact that after the process is over, he will not be able to run for president.
