Germany: recorded a second case of infection with British strain

In Germany, a second case of coronavirus infection was recorded, and the second infection was caused by a British strain of the pathogen. This is reported by Focus Online with reference to the authorities of the federal state of Lower Saxony.

According to them, for the first time a resident of Hanover contracted the coronavirus on November 27, re-infection occurred on January 11. The source of the infection remains unclear, but the authorities in the region are convinced that further chains of transmission of the virus are impossible. “The results of the control tests give us confidence,” explained Marlene Graf, deputy head of the public health department.

120 people were sent to quarantine, with whom the German woman contacted directly or indirectly. It will last not two weeks, but three, if there is no negative test.

Earlier it was reported that the British strain of the coronavirus was present in Germany back in November. This type of virus was found in a “very elderly” man with previous illnesses who subsequently died as a result of the illness. Also, the “British” coronavirus was detected in his wife.

A new coronavirus mutation was first discovered in the UK in September 2020, but it began to spread actively in December. The changes affected the area of the “spike” protein on the surface of the coronavirus, which is responsible for attachment to cells located in the mucous membrane of the lungs and a number of other organs. This variant of the virus appears to spread more easily and could lead to an increase in cases, deaths, and hospitalizations. To date, the British strain has been found in 60 countries.
