Belarus announced need to build a second and third nuclear power plant

Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov said on the air of the STV TV channel that in the future it would be necessary to build a second and third nuclear power plant in the republic. Interfax reports.

According to him, in 3-5 years the capacity of one nuclear power plant will not be enough. “We see a very correct formulation of the task, that it is now necessary to study the issue of building the next nuclear power plant. But in 20-25 years I see the need for a third nuclear power plant,” he said.

Gusakov added that currently there is an impression that with the introduction of the nuclear power plant, the country “will allegedly experience an excess of electricity.” However, with the development of science-intensive and electric-intensive industries, electricity will not be available, he concluded.

The current president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, first announced the possible construction of a second nuclear power plant on November 6, explaining that in this way the country would end its dependence on hydrocarbons. The head of Belarus called the first station built with a Russian loan of ten billion dollars a happiness and a gift. This summer, Moscow improved the terms of the loan.

At the power unit launch ceremony, he repeated his idea and declared the republic a nuclear power. According to Lukashenka, after the start of the NPP operation, “the most advanced technologies” should flow into the country, and not only into the energy sector, innovations and high-tech industries will begin to develop.
