The US Department of Justice is discussing the possibility that some of the participants in the storming of the Capitol can escape punishment. The Washington Post learned about it.
We are talking only about those protesters who were not involved in violence, threats and pogroms in the offices of legislators. However, the other side opposes this, and considers it important to send the Americans a convincing signal that political violence and lawlessness must be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
At the moment, the discussion is at an early stage. So far, no final decision has been made on whether or not to drop the charges against some citizens.
On January 6, Republican protesters stormed the Capitol building and surrounded the Senate Hall. The Senate and the House of Representatives interrupted a meeting at which it was planned to approve the results of the last elections. During the protests, police detained nearly 70 rioters, killing five.
