A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7 occurred in the area of the South Shetland Islands, which are located between South America and Antarctica. This is reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, RIA Novosti reports.
Shocks were recorded at a depth of 40 kilometers at 23:36 local time (02:36 the next day Moscow time). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 1328 kilometers from the Chilean city of Punta Arenas and 216 kilometers from the Chilean research station Bernardo O’Higgins.
The Chilean Home Office of Emergency Management (ONEMI) has declared a tsunami threat to the Chilean Antarctic Territory.
