The Central Bank calculated how many Russians suffered from the actions of banking fraudsters: every second resident of the country faced this. The Izvestia newspaper reports this.

According to the research, about 30 percent of companies and about 48 percent of citizens dealt with cybercriminals. At the same time, the level of confidence of credit institutions’ clients in the security of financial services increased from 70 to 73 percent. The research was carried out in August last year, 198 legal entities and 41.6 thousand individuals took part in it.

Among the most popular methods of deception, the regulator named social engineering methods that exploit coronavirus topics. For example, Russians were offered to be tested for the virus, extorted money from them for violating self-isolation, and promised quick payments of benefits and benefits. The cybercriminals also played on the growing interest of Russians in gambling on the stock exchange: clients were actively lured to sites where they promised to teach investment for money.

At the end of December, the Central Bank calculated that in the first half of last year the volume of transactions without the consent of the client amounted to 4 billion rubles, and in the third quarter of 2020 cyber fraudsters lured out another 2.5 billion from Russians. For comparison, in 2019, scammers stole 6.5 billion rubles from Russians. The head of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina also faced telephone scammers. She said she hung up and reminded everyone to do the same in a similar situation.
