Germany responded to environmentalists’ protest against Nord Stream 2

The German Federal Office for Maritime Navigation and Hydrography (BSH) has responded to environmental organizations the Union for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (NABU) and Deutsche Umwelthilfe, which filed complaints about the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. RIA Novosti reports.

The regulator is waiting for clarifications from environmental organizations. “The protest must be substantiated, then the BSH will make a decision – either reject the protest or accept it. But we need time to study it,” the department noted.

The review process will take place out of court. How long it will last is “impossible to say,” since there is no legal regulation of these terms. The ministry added that they “do not want to speculate” on the question of what consequences this procedure may have specifically for the timing of the gas pipeline.

Earlier it was reported that two environmental organizations operating in Germany were able to delay the resumption of the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. They filed a complaint against the decision of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, which allowed the continuation of work in the exclusive economic zone of Germany. The regulator confirmed the acceptance of complaints, which means that the resolution is suspended pending their consideration. The document is valid from January to May 2021.
