New space home for humanity proposed

Physicist Pekka Janhunen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute has suggested that Ceres, a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt, is a suitable target for human colonization in the solar system. This is reported in an article published in the arXiv preprint repository.

The author proposes to build a station in orbit around Ceres, which will be close enough to the surface of a minor planet to be able to build a space elevator just over a thousand kilometers long. This will allow the delivery of building materials and resources from the surface for restocking and repairs. For these purposes, Ceres contains enough nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide.

Yanhunen suggests that the station itself will be more than one and a half kilometers long and will consist of thousands of interconnected cylindrical structures adapted for human life, recreation and agriculture. Two giant disk mirrors. resembling the shell of a bivalve mollusk, must collect solar energy. Artificial gravity can be created by rotating the station. The initial population can reach 50 thousand.
