The chairman of the Constitutional Court of Moldova, Domnika Manole, explained the decision to cancel the law restoring the official status to the Russian language. TASS reports.
“The law protested by the deputies gave Russian a privileged status in relation to other languages of ethnic minorities, which was not provided for by the constitution,” said Manole.
She added that the document gave Russian “a status similar to that of the state language.
The new law required additional costs for translation of documents and training of civil servants in the Russian language. Such changes in legislation need to be assessed by the government.
“Since there was no corresponding assessment of the Cabinet, the Constitutional Court recognized that the law was adopted in violation of the constitution,” Manole said.
Previously, the law was declared unconstitutional at the request of several MPs.
