Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya predicted a second wave of protests against President Alexander Lukashenko. She expressed this opinion in a conversation with the Estonian broadcasting portal ERR.
Tikhanovskaya clarified that protests against the results of the presidential elections and the actions of the security forces have not subsided in Belarus since August, but they have become local and small in number. According to her, mass demonstrations in Belarus will resume in the spring – at present, the protest actions are not so large-scale due to the cold, the opposition leader explained.
“The fact that there were no mass demonstrations is natural, because people are tired, and now it is cold. But what is important is that in the heart and head, this has not changed. Now the popular movement will grow and by spring will return to the old However, everything depends on the Belarusians, “the oppositionist concluded.
Tikhanovskaya arrived in Estonia to take part in an unofficial virtual meeting of the UN Security Council on the freedom of Belarusian media. During her visit, she also met with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Prime Minister Juri Ratas and members of the Estonian parliament. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu presented the policy with the Order of the Cross of the Land of Mary (Cross of Merit to Estonia).
In Belarus, for the sixth month, the massive protests that began after the presidential elections on August 9 continue. Lukashenka, who ran for a sixth term, received 80 percent of the vote, according to official results. The opposition considers the elections to be rigged.
