Amazon and Logz announce Elasticsearch forks

Amazon announced to create its own a fork of the search, analysis and storage platform Elasticsearch , as well as the platform-related web interface Kibana . The decision was made after transferring the original project to the non-free SSPL license and ceasing to publish changes under the old Apache 2.0 license. A few days ago, the OSI (Open Source Initiative) organization, which is engaged in verifying license compliance Open Source criteria , confirmed that the SSPL is not open source and products based on it should be considered proprietary.

As the motivation for creating the fork, the intention is to keep Elasticsearch and Kibana in the form of open projects and provide a complete open source solution developed with the participation of the community. The fork will continue the independent development of the Open Distro for Elasticsearch/”> Open Distro for Elasticsearch , which was previously developed together with Expedia Group and Netflix in the form of an add-on over Elasticsearch included additional plugins with free analogues of paid platform components. All changes and fixes implemented for Open Distro for Elasticsearch were previously upstream, but from now on the project will be converted to an independent fork.

Within a few weeks, a fork will be created from the latest Elasticsearch 7.10 codebase, which remains under the old Apache 2.0 license, after which the fork will continue to develop independently in a separate repository at GitHub and will be used in future releases of Open Distro for Elasticsearch, and will also be used in Amazon Elasticsearch Service (Amazon ES).

Simultaneously, Logz.io also announced the creation of a fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana, in which along with some other companies and community representatives, will try to keep the codebase up to date under the Apache 2.0 license. The fork is planned to be developed jointly with all stakeholders, under the control of the community and on an independent platform, for example, under the supervision of the non-profit organization Apache Software Foundation or
Cloud Native Computing Foundation. It is possible that Logz will join forces with Amazon and as a result, one joint open source project will be created.

The founder and CEO of Logz.io said that the frustration of Elasticsearch B.V. is perceived even more painfully against the background of the fact that five years ago he admired the corporate culture and leaders of this company. But the change in license was not a surprise, since the last few years Elasticsearch B.V. gradually abandoned the open model towards developing commercial add-ons.
