Preparing for EVA is a complex and responsible procedure

Up to three spacewalks can be performed by the ISS-65 crew in the upcoming expedition to the International Space Station. The purpose of the extravehicular activities of the cosmonauts will be the phased integration of the Nauka module into the Russian segment of the ISS. According to Roskosmos cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov, each of the possible exits is worked out in turn in the hydro laboratory in the process of testing its systems.

During a dive, astronauts spend about four hours under water on average. Then the participants in the test process discuss how successful it was. A detailed analysis of the actions is possible due to the fact that underwater video is being filmed.

“Preparing for extravehicular activity is a rather complicated procedure, like the activity itself,” explained Pyotr Dubrov. “In outer space, it is always carried out by two cosmonauts in order to ensure safety. If an unforeseen situation suddenly occurs to someone, the partner will perform an operation to rescue him and reverse airlock. By the way, the airlock module itself is designed only for two, so, for example, it is impossible for three of us to go into outer space. “

The first diving experience with Peter Dubrov took place at a time when he was undergoing general space training and practicing typical actions. Then, as a backup, he performed real tasks that the ISS-64 crew faced at the stage of their preparation for flight. Now the cosmonaut participates in tests not as a backup, but as a member of the ISS-65 prime crew.

The launch of the Soyuz MS-18 manned transport vehicle with the crew of the 65th long-term expedition is planned to be carried out in April 2021. There is not much time left before the launch, so preparations for a space flight are carried out at the Cosmonaut Training Center in an intensive mode.
