In early 2021, rebar prices fell in Russia, which rose in price at a record at the end of December, writes RBC, citing sources familiar with the course of the industry meeting at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Metallurgists have reduced prices for their products.
Representatives of steel companies told Deputy Ministers Viktor Yevtukhov and Dmitry Volkov that prices for their rebar on the domestic market began to decline in early 2021 under the influence of external conditions.
Direct contracts with construction companies – the main consumers of fittings – also played a role. The authorities recommended to conclude them to market participants at the end of last year, calling it the most reliable way to achieve price reductions. In the opinion of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the absence of intermediaries in the rebar auctions should exclude the “speculative component” in the price.
According to Evtukhov, meetings of the working group, which includes government representatives and market participants, will be held weekly to finally stabilize the situation.
At the end of December, prices for rebar reached 60 thousand rubles per ton. Thus, the growth in the last month of the year was 40 percent. At the same time, for the full year of 2020, the cost decreased by 2.6 percent. By mid-January, rebar prices were down 8-10 percent from their peak.
